DOCTOR
OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM
Prospective students are encouraged to contact the Department of
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (405-325-4202 or tbrhodes@ou.edu)
for program area information and a description of departmental requirements.
In addition, students should review both the Graduate College Bulletin
and information on this website which describes the procedures and
requirements for graduate study in Adult and Higher Education.
Note: Due to high current student enrollment, and in order to provide the best possible scenario for student success, the faculty is placing a moratorium on admission to the Ph.D. program for the 2007-08 academic year. We anticipate review of applications in Spring 2008 for Ph.D. admission effective Fall 2008.

Applications
for the doctoral program will be reviewed each Spring, with applications
due by March 1. Prospective
students interested in applying to the doctoral program must submit
their application to both the University Admissions Office and to
the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. The
University Admissions application consists of:
- the
Admissions
application form;
- official
transcripts showing both graduate and undergraduate work; and
- a
$25.00 application processing fee.
The application
materials for the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy
Studies should be sent to Ms. Trudy Rhodes using the address stated
above. The departmental application consists of the following materials:
- Unofficial
copies of transcripts (photocopies);
- GRE
scores (verbal, quantitative, and analytical) (photocopies
are acceptable);
- Resume;
- Statement
of goals;
- A
minimum of three letters of references (to include both academic
and professional references) (these cannot be from EDAH faculty);
- A
sample of scholarly writing.
The
statement of goals is a 3-5 page, typed essay in which the applicant
should address the following: (a) professional aspirations;
(b) the relationship between previous experience and professional
aspirations; (c) discussion of the strengths and weaknesses
of the OU program in Adult and Higher Education in light of
professional aspirations; and (d) a description of research
interests. This statement should demonstrate a mutual compatibility
between the applicant's professional interests and the EDAH
program. In all cases, it must give evidence that the applicant
has carefully investigated OU's offerings, has appropriate qualifications
to undertake the proposed studies, demonstrates a deliberate
and reflective approach to her or his intellectual and professional
development, and can write a well substantiated, clearly focused,
persuasive essay. Pertaining to the GRE exam, it is a required
part of the applicant's doctoral application even if the exam
was not required in the applicant's previous master's program.
UNCLASSIFIED STATUS
If you are unsure about whether our program is right for you, you
can always explore our curriculum by taking classes as an unclassified
student. Under this status, the OU Graduate College will allow you
to take up to 12 credit hours of graduate work without having to
be officially admitted into a program. This option can introduce
you to our field and our professors and can assist you in your decision
about whether this program is right for you. Any credit hours that
you earn under this status can count toward the hours we require
in our degree programs. For further information about this status,
please contact the Graduate College.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The EDAH program invites and welcomes all applicants from outside
the country. Applicants who are in need of financial assistance
are advised that departmental financial assistance is very limited
and should not be relied on as a source of finance. Competition
for graduate assistantships is extremely keen, and historically,
the chance of students getting an assistantship without the
faculty knowing who they are will be slim to non-existent. Therefore,
all international students are advised that if they qualify
and are accepted into the EDAH program that they should seek
funding for their education outside the program area.
