Master's Degree Program Requirements

    The purpose of the master's degree in early childhood education is to increase the depth and breadth of students' understanding of developmental theory, curriculum, and instructional methodology for educating and caring for children from birth to age eight.  Students will explore current research and issues in the field and the forces affecting them.

Core (11 hrs minimum)

Studies in Teaching and Learning (3 hrs)
Studies in Cultural Diversity (2-3 hrs)
Research (6 hrs)
Research Synthesis (0-3 hrs)

Concentration (20 hrs minimum)

Specialization (15 hrs)
EDEC 6033 Theory and Research in Early Childhood Education (3 hrs)
Approved Curriculum Course (3 hrs) such as:
EACS 5123 Advanced Studies in Early Childhood Education Curriculum
Concentration coursework directly related to career goals, with courses approved by advisor
(9 hrs). 

Electives (6-9 hrs)
Graduate Coursework related to early childhood education and child development, selected in consultation with advisor. 

Total Core and Concentration Hours: 36

Doctoral Degree Program Requirements

Core (23-24 hrs minimum)

ILAC 6013 Proseminar in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum (3 hrs)
ILAC 6023 Theoretical Issues in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum (3 hrs)
Studies in Teaching and Learning (3 hrs)*
Studies in Cultural Diversity (3 hrs)*
Research Methodology (12 hrs)*
*Selected from list of approved courses.

Specialization (36 hrs minimum)

Early Childhood Education
    Coursework in the following categories:  child/human development, early childhood education theory, early childhood education curriculum; and working with families.  In addition: focused coursework directly related to career goals (minimum 15 hrs). 

Electives in Early Childhood Education and Related Areas
    Coursework related to early childhood education and related areas, as approved by the student's advisor and committee. 

Required
Course related to issues in Early Childhood Education (may be part of any above categories).

Electives (12 hrs maximum)
Dissertation (9 minimum /18 maximum hrs)

Total Core, Specialization, Electives, and Dissertation Hours: 90 minimum
