Undergraduate Requirements
Master's Degree
The purpose of the masters' program in mathematics education is to
promote professional and scholarly growth in students' understanding of
mathematics learning and pedagogy from theoretical, research, and
practical
orientations, as well as to provide leadership for the mathematics
education
community.
Specialization (9-18 hrs) from the following:
EDMA 5153 Problem Centered Learning (3hrs)
EDMA 5523 Elementary School Mathematics Curriculum (3 hrs)
EDMA 5533 Middle/High School Mathematics Curriculum (3 hrs)
EDMA 5753 Theory and Research in Mathematics Education (3 hrs)
EDMA 5763 History of Mathematics for Educators (3 hrs)
EDMA 5973 Use of Technology in Teaching Mathematics (3 hrs)
EDUC 6163 Systems Theory and Learning Organizations (3 hrs)
EDUC 6930 Teaching and Learning of Mathematics (3 hrs)
Electives (0-6 hrs)
Courses may be taken in the following areas: social foundations in
education; instructional psychology and technology; and educational
administration,
curriculum, and supervision, as approved by the advisor.
Mathematics content (3-9 hrs)
Students are advised to complete courses to obtain the equivalent of
an OU certification in secondary mathematics if their focus is on
middle/secondary
school mathematics education. Students whose focus is on elementary
mathematics
education are advised to take mathematics courses throughout two
semesters
of calculus and 6 hours of graduate mathematics. Courses may be
selected
from any graduate mathematics courses upon the recommendation and
advise
of the advisor and in agreement with the student's career objectives.

Doctoral Degree
Education and Related Areas (3-18 hrs)
Courses may be taken in the following areas, as approved by the advisor
and committee: social foundations, instructional psychology and
technology;
and educational administration, curriculum and supervision.
Content Areas (9-18 hrs)
Students are advised to obtain the equivalent of a Masters in
Mathematics.
Courses may be selected from any graduate mathematics courses upon
recommendation
and advice of the student's advisor and committee to achieve balance in
all areas of applied and theoretical mathematics and agreements with
the
student's career objectives.
