Master's Degree

    The purpose of the master's program in reading education is to foster students' understanding of current theory and research in literacy learning, teaching, and curriculum from birth through post secondary education.  Students may also wish to obtain a reading specialist certification in conjunction with the master's degree.
 
Master's Program (M.Ed.)
Concentration:  Reading Education
Core:  11 hours minimum
     Studies in Teaching & Learning
Studies in Cultural Diversity (2-3 hrs)
Research (6 hrs)

Research Synthesis (0-3 hrs)
Concentration:  20 hrs minimum
Required: (15 hours)

EDRG 5803 Theories of Reading/Literacy

EDRG 5812 Evaluating Literacy Processes: Formal, Informal, Alternative Methods (2 hours)

EDRG 5821 Clinic: Diagnostic Case Study (Co-requisite with EDRG 5912) 1 hour of lab credit

EDRG 5912 Developing Strategic Readers: Instructional Strategies (2 hours)

EDRG 5921 Clinic: Correcting Reading Problems (Co-requisite with EDRG 5912) 1 hour of lab credit

EDRG 5903 School-Wide Literacy Programs: Development & Supervision (3 hours)
Electives: (6 hours minimum) Classes in Reading, Language Arts, Adult Education, or other areas tied to program goals

Content Areas
    In consultation with the advisor and committee and based on student goals and interests, the student may select course work in Reading, English/Language Arts Education, Early Childhood, Adult Education or other appropriate areas.

    Electives (12 hrs maximum)
Dissertation (9 minimum-18 maximum hrs)
Total Core, Specialization, Electives, and Dissertation Hours:  90 minimum

Reading Specialist's Certification Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Reading Education
  • 3 Years Teaching Experience
  • Successfully passing the Reading Specialist Certification Exam given by OTCP.
