Social Studies teachers instill in students the ideas of democracy, citizenship and history. Students in the nationally recognized Social Studies Education program at the University of Oklahoma College of Education are prepared to teach a variety of social sciences areas, including economics, history, geography and government, and help their students to become responsible citizens. Beginning with their first College of Education course, students spend more than 100 hours in field experiences observing and tutoring students.
These field experiences prepare students for student-teaching internships during their final semester before graduation. During these internships, students observe, prepare lesson plans and teach. The student teaching internship typically lasts 16 weeks.
The Social Studies Education curriculum is designed so that students can receive Bachelor of Science degrees with teaching certification in four years, though this can vary depending on when the student becomes a fully admitted student to the college.
A Social Studies Education student graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. With a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, a student may choose to pursue graduate degrees in a multitude of disciplines.
Students are recommended for certification to become Social Studies teachers for middle school or junior high school and/or high school after graduation and after passing required state certification exams which include the OGET, OSAT and OPTE.
