Extra Credit is available for the students enrolled in Intro ZOO 1114, taught by Professor Melody Brooks. To earn this extra credit,
1) Attend one of two public lectures, listed on the home page (space is limited, so it is first come, first served).
2) Pick up a certificate of attendance from Dr. Kaspari at the conclusion of the lecture.
3) Write an essay of no more than 250 words (typed, single spaced, 12 point font, no more than one page). The essay should consist of an explanation to an 8th grade class one one of the following three topics:
1) Why are ants so successful? What features of an ant colony allow them to live almost anywhere there is dry land?
2) Why did sterile workers in an ant colony first appear to Charles Darwin as "actually fatal" to his whole theory of natural selection?
3) How do ants communicate within the colony, and how does that communication differ from the way your family members communicate to each other?
4) Make sure the first line of the essay includes the following information:
"Last Name, First Name, Student ID Number"
5) Staple your certificate of attendance to the essay.
6) Turn in your essay to the ZAP room by Friday, April 3, at 5:00PM.
All essays will be read, and those following the above instructions will receive extra credit points. The best essay from each class will be selected for special consideration.
