For Immediate Release:
AirTouch Communications Joins Industry Advisory Board of
Oklahoma University's Center for the Study of Wireless Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
NORMAN, OKLAHOMA, June 9, 1999 --The Center for the Study of Wireless Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) at the University of Oklahoma announced today that AirTouch Communications has become a member of the Center's Industry Advisory Board (IAB).
The Oklahoma EMC Center is chartered to work with the wireless and medical device industries as well as government agencies to resolve inter-industry electromagnetic compatibility issues. The IAB is responsible for the strategic direction of the Oklahoma EMC Center but does not in any way influence or bias the results of the Center’s research. Companies may participate in the Center by becoming sponsors or users of its services.
"The academic independence of the Oklahoma EMC Center assures that industry, government and interested parties will have equal access as well as an independent third party resource to its research, expertise and services," said Dr. Hank Grant, Director of the EMC Center. "We view AirTouch's involvement as a board member as both very important and valuable. Their size, as well as their commitment, will help us move forward in making sure that wireless electronic products operate in their intended environment without being effected by other electronic products or being a source of interference themselves."
AirTouch Communications is the largest wireless company in the world based on the 44 million customers served by its global ventures. AirTouch has more than 19 million proportionate customers based on its ownership share in cellular, paging, and personal communications services in the United States, Belgium, Egypt, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Korea, Spain, and Sweden. AirTouch also has an interest in the Globalstar satellite system. On January 15, 1999, AirTouch and Vodafone Group Plc announced a definitive agreement to merge. If consummated, the transaction would result in the creation of a global wireless company with more than 29 million customers in 23 countries.
The Oklahoma EMC Center is located in the Sarkeys Energy Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. The Center is managed by the School of Industrial Engineering in partnership with the School of Electrical Engineering and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma EMC Center is a member of the ANSI/C63 Committee, the AAMI/FDA EMC Committee for implantable device testing standards, and a recipient of a National Science Foundation Grant as an I/UCRC (Industry/University Cooperative Research Center) for studying wireless EMC.
