Electromagnetic Interference Management inthe Hospital Environment - Part I: An Introduction
This report is addressed to hospital administrators and clinical engineers concerned with the effects of electromagnetic interaction of wireless devices with medical devices.
This report gives an introduction to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), discussing general terminology, types of interference, and the ambient electromagnetic environment. Problem reports show the scope of EMI, and five general solutions are discussed: altering the coupling path, ad-hoc testing, identification of electromagnetic sources, education, and conformity to standards. A list of ten recommendations is also given for hospital administrators to manage EMI.
