Hospital Simulator Prototype
The EMC Center is developing a new
software
simulation program to assist medical centers in developing and evaluating
hospital policies concerning medical and wireless devices. The program
should help hospitals determine where medical devices should be located
and if any limitations should be put on the use of wireless phones in the
hospital. To accomplish this, the EMC Center is developing a sound,
scientific methodology for evaluating the effects of management policies
for the use of wireless devices in hospitals.
        Based on simulation of hospital
operations,
officials will be able to look at many factors that could affect
interactions. The software provides several output values, including:
the number of interactions, the probability that interactions will occur,
the duration of the exposure, the magnitude and severity/ consequences of
the interactions, and the location of the interactions.

The manual was designed to provide important
information to assist in managing EMC issues in hospitals. Development
of the hospital manual was funded by the CTIA.
        The hospital resource manual
contains
articles and information on recent research activities in the area of
electromagnetic compatibility in healthcare, and is formatted so
administrators, medical professionals, biomedical engineers, and hospital
personnel can easily identify and access the sections most pertinent to
their job function.
The manual is made up of six
chapters. The
first four chapters include: an overview and objectives, a roadmap for
each user type, a primary reference on the subject of the chapter, and
abstracts of the related articles. The references are prioritized with
"must read," "should read," and "can read" labels. In addition, the
fifth chapter is a "Filing Cabinet" chapter. It contains complete copies
of the more than 75 abstracted articles. Full references are provided.
Finally, chapter six contains a list of Internet resources.

Hospital Report
        This report is addressed to
hospital
administrators and clinical engineers concerned with the effects of
electromagnetic interaction of wireless devices with medical devices.
        This report gives an
introduction to
electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility
(EMC), discussing general terminology, types of interference, and the
ambient electromagnetic environment. Problem reports show the scope of
EMI, and five general solutions are discussed: altering the coupling
path, ad-hoc testing, identification of electromagnetic sources,
education, and conformity to standards. A list of ten recommendations is
also given for hospital administrators to manage EMI.

Hospital Management Seminar (half day)
        The Center offers a half-day
seminar on EMI
Management in Hospitals. The development of the seminar was funded by
CTIA. The seminar is intended as a guide for hospital management to
educate them on the realities of EMI in hospitals and to provide them the
information so that they can develop an effective EMI management policy.
The seminar includes sessions on the medical environment, radiated EMC
problems in hospitals, EMC risks, C63.18 immunity testing standard,
hospital EMC policy evaluation software, management solutions to EMC
problems, and a success story.
