MEP Retention

Academic Achievement Recognition
Each fall, the OU MEP recognizes and honors those students who have achieved excellence in the classroom at the MEP Honors Banquet. Students are recognized as members of the 3.0, 3.5
and 4.0 Academic Clubs and presented a momento for the accomplishments. In addition, one outstanding student from each class is recognized by OU MEP for their leadership among their peers and in the classroom. The event is highlighted with the presentation of the MEP Graduates for the year.

Academic Counseling
Academic Tutoring: One of the features of the MEP Retention Component are Academic  Workshops for highly motivated students. Academic workshops are structured study group sessions whose participants are clustered in common sections of math, science and the introduction to engineering courses under the guidance of a workshop leader.

Career Fair
Each fall, the OU MEP, in conjunction with the Engineers Club, sponsors the Engineering Career Fair, which attracts many of the nation's leading engineering companies.

Clustering
The OU MEP is allowed by the university to enroll five to eight MEP students in specific sections of courses, such as Math, Introduction to Engineering, Chemistry, etc.... This allows MEP to set up Academic Workshops and tutorial groups with students sharing the same instructor, assignments, method of teaching and examinations.

Enrollment
The OU MEP is designated as an enrollment site on campus and is allowed to enroll MEP
students each semester. This allows the MEP staff to monitor and advise students on course selection and course loads.

Freshman Orientation Course
A three-hour course each fall semester and one-hour course each spring semester is designed for new freshman and transfer students to aid in the transition to the university environment.

Mid-Semester Intervention
The University of Oklahoma provides students with a Mid-Semester Grade check to provide students with an objective evaluation of performance. The OU MEP staff is notified of those students need additional support and encouragement and acts to help students perform to the potential.

Monitoring
MEP staff meets on a regular basis with individual student in order to evaluate academic progress

Open Door Policy
As a result of our retention philosphy, MEP students are encouraged to drop by anytime. The
office has been called a "home away from home".

Open Tutoring
While MEP has a very structured retention component for freshmen, all MEP students, regardless of class level, are encouraged to participate in tutoring services. Tutoring for math and engineering courses are available on either a scheduled or individual basis.

Placement Assistance
A very important retention activity is placement in summer internships. MEP works closely, as
a liaison, with corporations and MEP students in the promotion of these opportunities.

Resume Book
Each fall, in conjuction with the Engineering Career Fair, the OU MEP produces a resume book with is made available to all corporate sponsors and other companies requesting a copy.

Scholarships
MEP offers scholarships ranging from $500.00 to $2,000.00 per year. Primary criteria are academic credential.

Student Organizations
The OU MEP is the sponsor for three engineering student organizations
The American Indian Science and Engineering Soceity
The National Society of Black Engineers
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

Study Center
A study center is provided for Academic Workshops and tutoring in the residential center, where almost all freshman reside. This is an excellent location for students involved in structured groups or who simply need occasional assistance.

Student Reseach Opportunities
The OU MEP oversees research opportunities for minority students in science, engineeering and math (SEM) majors. The opportunities are available by grants from the National Science Foundation.

Test and Notebook Files
MEP maintains an active test and notebook file for students as an aid in their studies.
