SPECIAL NOTE ON INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY: State Regent's calendar regulations specify that the Summer Session calendar must contain 40 class days of instruction. Courses scheduled to meet on the designated Independence Day holiday must meet on the last day of the Summer Semester, to satisfy the required class time for the course, or arrange a make-up time period for that missed day.
The following information is provided to assist Deans and Departments in integrating four-week classes into their Summer Session Schedules.
I. INSTRUCTIONS.
A. SCHEDULING INSTRUCTIONS. The following scheduling regulations apply to lecture type courses offered in a four-week format. Laboratory hours should be computed on a basis that provides at least twice as many minutes of instruction for each credit hour given.
Lecture Type Instruction
1. One credit hour classes shall meet for 50 minutes each day, MT RF.
2. Two credit hours classes shall meet for 100 minutes each day, MT RF.
3. Three credit hour classes shall meet for 120 minutes each day, MTWRF.
4. Four credit hour classes shall meet to 160 minutes each day, MTWRF.
5. Five credit hour classes shall meet to 200 minutes each day, MTWRF.
B. SESSION DATES. The dates for each of the four-week sessions are listed on the Summer Schedule of Important Dates.
C. CLASS STARTS TIMES. Classes shall begin at the same times indicated in the instructions for eight-week classes
D. STUDENT CREDIT HOUR LIMITS. In order to insure academic integrity, the limit on the number of credit hours in which a student may enroll in the four-week format has been established. Unless specific permission is given by the Dean of the student's college, enrollment limits are as follows:
Students may enroll in a combination of four-week and eight-week classes with the following stipulations:
(1) No student may enroll in more than nine (9) credit hours during the summer session;
(2) Enrollment in each of the four-week sessions is limited to five (5) hours.
E. REGISTRATION. Students who wish to take Session II classes will be allowed to enroll during the normal registration periods up to the beginning of classes. However, those students may enroll without late fee in Session II classes, and other later-starting classes, until the day before the particular class actually starts. Any advisement or permission requirements will remain in effect.
F. ADD/DROP REGULATIONS. Because of the intensive format of four-week classes, students will be allowed to add four-week courses only through the second day of classes for that particular four-week session, unless given permission by the instructor and student's dean to enroll later. The time limit for dropping four-week classes will remain at one week.
G. REFUND REGULATIONS. The standard Summer Session refund periods will be in effect for all classes, including four-week classes. This will be done primarily for the sake of administrative simplicity and to avoid putting undue stress on students enrolled in four-week classes.
H. FINAL GRADE SHEETS. It is expected that instructors who teach during the first four-week session may wish to submit final grades at the time of the completion of the class. Instructors will have received class rolls by this time; they may submit grades on these and return them directly to the Office of Academic Records, 330 Buchanan Hall, in accordance with University grading policies.
