Scholarships for Veteran Students

The New York-based Fund for Veterans’ Education announced it would award up to $1 million in undergraduate scholarships for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan starting in the spring 2008 term. The awards, which may be renewed for following academic year, are intended to cover financial need not met by need-based grants and military education benefits. The Horatio Alger Scholarship Fund for Veterans who have served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom beginning September 11, 2001 or later. www.horatioalger.com.

Folds of Honor Foundation Scholarship

President David L. Boren has announced that the University of Oklahoma will offer a scholarship to posthumously recognize military service members who died while serving on active duty. Specifically, the scholarship will benefit a spouse or child of a military service member killed in the line of duty.

The first award will be available in the 2009-10 academic year should there be an eligible candidate. This award guarantees that the full cost of tuition, fees, books and room & board costs is covered through a combination of federal, state, institutional, and any other grants and scholarships the student is eligible to receive. The award is renewable for a maximum of eight (8) consecutive semesters provided the recipient maintains eligibility.

To be eligible the student must:

  • Be a spouse or child of a service person killed in the line of duty.
  • Be a resident of Oklahoma.
  • Be admitted as a degree seeking undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate student.
  • Annually file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Attend the University of Oklahoma full time.
  • Meet the University of Oklahoma financial aid academic standards of progress.

In the event the University determines at some future time that it is no longer possible for the funds to be used as specified herein due to changes in the status of the war theaters, this scholarship will be reviewed to determine the future end date of students qualifying for the award.
