Good Features of a Language or Cultural Discovery Essay

A good Language or Cultural Discovery essay:

1. makes readers clearly understand what the author discovered.
2. has vivid description and funny or interesting comparisons
3. begins with a good hook
4. uses good (perfect) vocabulary choices
5. helps readers feel what the author felt at the time described in the essay
6. has  a beginning, middle, and end
7. is clear and detailed so readers can easily understand the essay
8. uses natural sounding dialogue
9. has paragraphs that are smoothly connected so the essay flows rather than jumps around
10.   has a logical order
11. has a conclusion that is connected to the introduction and adds emphasis to the discovery
12. has a title that captures the main idea of the essay and that intrigues the readers
13. is consistent and doesn’t confuse readers
14. motivates readers or appeals to readers
15. uses experiences that readers can appreciate or that they are familiar with or can relate to
16. is about a discovery that is significant to the author--the author has changed as a result of the discovery
17. has a sincere author
18. uses comparisons and contrasts to emphasize the author’s ideas

3. is about a discovery that was significant for the author--the author changed as a result of the discovery

9. makes readers feel like they are actually there experiencing the events described
10. has a satisfying ending that may give advice
11. has direct quotation, or dialogue, that is natural sounding
12. avoids unnecessary information
13. has specific examples and not a lot of generalizations
14. gives readers enough information
15. has an indirect or provocative title

Section 38
A good Language or Cultural Discovery essay:

3. has dialogue
4. has a clear sequence of events
5. provides readers with the true feeling that the author is sincere and the events are
real
6. has a topic that interests readers because it is unique and exciting or maybe controversial
7. has an impressive and attractive introduction
8. is about an exciting and significant discovery
9. has an end that relates to the topic and the rest of the essay
10. gives readers enough information to clearly understand the discovery
11. avoids irrelevant or redundant information
12. has paragraphs that each develop one idea
13. stays focused on the discovery
14. has a title that reveals the topic and  that interests and attracts the readers
15. has content and organization that seem logical
