Guidelines for Sample Essay Letters
In a letter to the author of the sample essay you have been assigned, comment
on each of the following points:
1. The author's definition of the problem
2. The author's presentation of the solution
3. The author's justification for the solution--the reasons,
grounds, warrants, and backing that are used--mark on the sample essay
R1, R2, etc. for the reasons, and W1, W2 etc. for the warrants
4. The conditions of rebuttal
5. The beginning
6. The ending
7. The order of ideas in the essay
8. The strongest aspects of the essay
9. The aspects that need improvement
