In 2000, the University of Oklahoma
received the single most important collection of French Impressionism
ever given to an American public university. The gift included 22
paintings and 11 works on paper by such artists as Degas, Gauguin,
Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Vuillard, and
others. The donation came to the University as the bequest of Clara
Weitzenhoffer, an art collector and long-time supporter of the University.
The collection had been known only to a handful of scholars and
had been virtually unexhibited for the 50 years. In addition to
the works of art, the bequest included a collection of Mrs. Weitzenhoffer's
18th-century decorative arts, including period furniture, porcelain
and silver.
