Joe Andoe
U.S., b. 1955
Untitled, 1994
Oil on canvas
70 x 84 in.
Gift of the artist, 1994

Joe Andoe's art is characterized by a haunting, monochromatic, minimalist style. His unusual painting technique involves covering a primed support (usually canvas or paper) with a single color. He then creates an image by wiping away layers of paint before it dries, which exposes the underlying primed support. The artist's signature often figures prominently in his compositions.

Andoe grew up in Tulsa and now lives in New York. He received BFA and MFA degrees from the University of Oklahoma's School of Art, where he served as Distinguished Visiting Artist in the fall of 2000.
