Alan Davie was influenced specifically
by the symbolism and mythology expressed in the bold colors of the
CoBrA aesthetic. CoBrA, a group that took its name from the cities
in which the artists lived (Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam),
was a revolt against intellectual art. Its abstracted, but still
figurative, imagery was often influenced by prehistoric, tribal,
or folk art.
