Pierre Bonnard
France,
1867-1947
Nature morte à la théière (Still
Life with Teapot), 1936-37
Oil on canvas
15 x 18 in.
The Aaron M. and Clara Weitzenhoffer Collection, 2000 |
A member of the Nabis group during the
1890s and a friend of Vuillard, Bonnard emphasized color, luminosity,
and subjectivity in his art. His later works, such as this still
life, painted decades after the emergence of Fauvism and Cubism,
seem closer in spirit to Impressionism than to the avant-garde movements
of the 20th century. However, Bonnard stated that he wanted to go
beyond the Impressionists with a more expressive use of color and
a more rigorous compositional structure.
