Jean-Louis Forain
France, 1852-1931
La Loge
Pastel and gouache on paper
18 1/2 x 11 1/2 in.
The Aaron M. and Clara Weitzenhoffer Collection, 2000 |
In late nineteenth-century Paris, Forain
was famous as a satiric illustrator of biting wit, and he exhibited
in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions. Edgar Degas was
his close friend and strongest influence, and the two artists often
even shared models. Degass impact is evident in the subject
matter of the present work, which depicts a ballerina and her suitor
in a dressing room.
Forain is also known for his friendships
with the poets Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud.
