Edouard Vuillard
France, 1868-1940
Woman with Hat, 1892
Oil on canvas
8 x 6 1/2 in.
The Aaron M. and Clara Weitzenhoffer Collection, 2000 |
As with this painting and Femme
en bleu, Vuillard's brightly colored, experimental works
of the early 1890s, which reduce their subjects to their essences
and emphasize flatness, were usually painted on board. This provides
an especially absorbent support for the oil paint, and the areas
of the board left unpainted play a major role in the pictorial structure
of the works.
Vuillard's figure paintings were
mostly of women and children, even though he remained a life-long
bachelor.
