What is a docent?
The term comes from Latin meaning “to teach,” and refers to the volunteers who give museum tours and lead classroom activities.
The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art has a corps of around fifty docents who are specially trained on the permanent collection, rotating exhibitions, and touring techniques to facilitate outstanding visitor experiences. In addition to their trainings, the docents also coordinate group trips to other museums and sites of interest throughout the year.
What does it take to be a docent?
You don’t need to be an art expert or have previous museum experience to join our team. Here’s what we look for in a docent:
- Learning enthusiasts who enjoy sharing knowledge with others
- Outgoing individuals with a good sense of humor
- Team players with diverse backgrounds and interests
