Tradition in Transition: Russian Icons from the Hillwood Collection

    Opening Reception

Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Sandy Bell Gallery

Tradition in Transition: Russian Icons from the Age of the Romanovs tells a story that has rarely been explored: that of the Russian icon or sacred devotional image during 300 years of Romanov rule (1613 -1918). The exhibition illustrates the impact Western culture had on icon painting, how icons from the period departed from tradition, and the emergence of decorative icon covers, or oklads. Drawn from the collection of the Hillwood Museum & Gardens, how of Marjorie Merriweather Post, Washington, D.C., the exhibition is being circulated by International Arts & Artists, a Washington, D.C. based exhibition service that focuses on cross-cultural, international exhibitions.

    Vitaly Komar, Artist
Komar, part of the Russian emigrant team Komar and Melamid, will discuss a project which reflects the artists’ interpretation of a professional market research survey about aesthetic preferences and taste in painting.  The artists attempted to discover what a true “people’s art” would look like.  Although the first poll in 1994 was conducted in the United States, the artists expanded their market research to more than a dozen countries around the globe the following year. Reflections: Russian Contemporary Photography Opening Reception

Location: Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Sandy Bell Gallery

The 1990s was a time of extraordinary turmoil in Russia. From an independent perspective, young European and American writers employed by the Moscow Times reported on the death throes of the Soviet system and Russia's struggles, after decades of communism, to reinvent itself as a democracy with a market-based economy. The foreign editors employed a small group of local photojournalists to take pictures documenting the events the reporters covered. As Russians, they were acutely aware of the often painful changes that were occurring around them. The photographs in this exhibition, taken for the Moscow Times between 1992 and 2002, represent their own reflections on Russia after communism.
