Art as Identity: The Operative Principles of Affirmation, Accommodation and
Appropriation in the Native American Artistic Pursuit of Self

Moderated by Dr. Edwin L. Wade, Art Critic, with Contemporary Native Artists

Over the course of the past four centuries, Native Americans have employed the survival strategies of affirmation (who they are), accommodation (who the non–Native American world wants them to be) and appropriation (who they become through borrowing from others). Nowhere is this better seen than in the evolving image and diversity of Native arts. Drawing upon the talent and insight of Native Oklahoman artists represented within the Rennard Strickland Collection, two discussion panels will be formed to address these and other critical aesthetic issues confronting contemporary Native American artists.

Morning session: Joseph Erb, Joan Hill, Ruthe Blalock Jones and Shawna Morton Cain
Afternoon session: Bill Glass, Bill Rabbit, Martha Berry and Lisa Rutherford

Coffee will be served during registration at 9:30 am. Lunch with the artists is $25 per person. Reservations for lunch must be made by Sept 4. Call 405.325.5990 for reservations or more information. The sessions are free, but seating is limited.

Lee Mullican was a native of Chickasha, Oklahoma, and spent much of his career in California. In the 1970s, he began visiting Taos, New Mexico and spent part of each year there during the last decades of his career.
