    Norman’s 2nd Friday Art Walk Welcomes a New Gallery in November

            NORMAN, OKLA. – Norman Arts Council’s Second Friday Circuit of Art of November welcomes a new gallery at Re-Run Junction, as well as arts activities in the OU Arts District as a part of OU’s Campus Activities Council Family Weekend.  The art walk is from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at art galleries throughout Norman.

    Photography Gift Premieres as Exhibition Nov. 6 at FJJMA

            NORMAN, OKLA. – It takes a creative eye to collect and appreciate art. Carol Beesley, who has been collecting photography and teaching art at the University of Oklahoma for 30 years, shares a glimpse of her artistic vision with a new exhibition at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

    Live 1930s Comedy Hits OU Museum Stage Oct. 23

            NORMAN, OKLA. – Before Oklahoma became a household name on Broadway, playwright Lynn Riggs debuted the comedy Russet Mantle. The University of Oklahoma School of Drama and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art are teaming up to present a free staged reading of the 1936 comedy at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the museum.

    Student Party Offers Live Performances Oct. 7 at FJJMA

            NORMAN, OKLA. – Students at the University of Oklahoma will get preferential treatment when the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art opens a new exhibition with a party at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7.

    ‘Sooners’ Exhibit Explores Oklahoma, New Mexico Art

            NORMAN, OKLA. – Deep within the history of Oklahoma art lies a connection with New Mexico, an enchanted land and home to Western and Native American artists who inspired Sooner artists for decades and beyond.

    NATIVE ARTISTS TO DISCUSS IDENTITY ISSUES SEPT. 11 AT FJJMA

            Eight Native Oklahoman artists are gathering for a public panel discussion about survival strategies and identity issues during a special event at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art on Friday, Sept. 11. At 10 a.m., the artists will begin a session titled Art as Identity: The Operative Principles of Affirmation, Accommodation and Appropriation in the Native American Artistic Pursuit of Self.

    'SPIRIT RED' CAPTURES ADVENTURES OF COLLECTING NATIVE ART

            NORMAN, OKLA. – Art appreciation takes many forms, but for Rennard Strickland, collecting art has become a lifelong legacy. Highlights from his art acquisitions go on display in a new exhibition June 4 at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

    CURTIS EXHIBTION UNVEILS 1920s NATIVE OKLAHOMAN PHOTOS

          NORMAN, OKLA. – Thirty years after photographer Edward S. Curtis began his epic mission to research and photograph Western American Indian tribes, the ambitious journalist landed in Oklahoma. Visitors to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art March 28 to May 17 will see how photos from his 1926 excursion reveal an authentic look at Native Oklahomans.

    APRIL 10 CIRCUIT OF ART DRAWS NORMAN STUDIO ARTISTS

         NORMAN – They say the third time’s a charm. Local art galleries will find out for sure on Friday, April 10, when the Second Friday Circuit of Art comes to town. The third installment of the Norman Arts Council’s new monthly art gallery route features art exhibitions, live entertainment, guest artists and much more.

    ‘Borderlands’ Explores Native, Western American Art at FJJMA

          NORMAN – Kicking off a full year of Native American and Western American artwork, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art unveils its first exhibition for 2009 at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23. “Borderlands: Images of the American West” reveals a look at the Western United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

    NY ARTIST FEINSTEIN TO LECTURE AT FJJMA FEB. 25

          NORMAN – Her artwork has been reviewed in Momenta Art, Art in America and The New York Times to name a few. New York artist Rochelle Feinstein will visit the University of Oklahoma for a public lecture at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

            NORMAN – Western American history converges with art when Sterling Evans reveals a historical approach to a new art exhibition 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

    INTERNATIONAL RUSSIAN EXHIBITION TO PREMIERE AT UNIVERISTY OF OKLAHOMA ART MUSEUM

            NORMAN  – Russian street scenes, paintings of the American West, colorful abstracts and emotive portraits are all part of an international exhibition exploring early 20th-century Russian immigrant art debuting in October at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. A free, public opening is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in the museum’s Sandy Bell Gallery.

    STUART FAMILY FOUNDATION MAKES GIFT TO FRED JONES JR. MUSEUM OF ART ADDITION

          NORMAN – University of Oklahoma Regent Jon R. Stuart and his wife, Dee Dee, of Tulsa, have made a $3 million lead gift from the Stuart Family Foundation to the expansion project for the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, OU President David Boren announced at the December meeting of the OU Board of Regents.

    CHERNOBYL FILM, PANEL HEATS UP OU ART MUSEUM NOV. 17

           NORMAN – Twenty years after a nuclear reactor malfunction exploded radiation into the night sky, Chernobyl continues to take its toll on residents of the Ukrainian city of Pripyat. Although more than 50 workers at the infamous reactor died immediately following the April 26, 1986, explosion, approximately 4,000 have died from the long-term effects of radiation poisoning over the past 20 years.

    RUSSIAN PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION OPENS NOV. 8 AT OU ART MUSEUM

          NORMAN – In 1992, just months after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a handful of Russian photographers began documenting life after communism for a new independent newspaper, the Moscow Times. Their photographs come to life in a new exhibition opening Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma. A Museum Association Membership party, which is open without charge to the public, is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7.

          NORMAN – Two important Russian émigré figures -- an award-winning novelist and a popular conceptual artist -- are appearing at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus. Gary Shteyngart and Vitaly Komar are scheduled to address the campus and community during free, public lectures Wednesday and Friday, Oct. 22 and 24, respectively.

    HIGHLIGHT FJJMA OPENING OCT.4

          NORMAN – The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma premieres an international exhibition with special guests at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.  Derrick Cartwright, executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art, and Dr. Evgenia Petrova, deputy director of science at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, are scheduled to speak during the free, public opening of American Artists from the Russian Empire.

    CONFERENCE AT OU TO EXAMINE

    THE STATE OF U.S.- RUSSIAN RELATIONS

         NORMAN – Policymakers, academicians and businessmen from the United States and Russia will focus on both the political and economic relations between the two countries and the geopolitical importance of energy during a free, public conference Friday, Oct. 3, at the University of Oklahoma.  The conference is titled, “Oil, Gas and Power: Russia and the United States.”

            NORMAN – Beginning Friday, April 18, visitors to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma will have the opportunity to see “China: Insights” an exhibition that brings together the work of seven photographers from mainland China: Chen Yuan Zhong, Hua Er, Jia Yu Chuan, Li Nan, Yang Yan Kang, Yu Haibo and Zhang Xinmin.

    PHILBROOK AND OU RECEIVE ADKINS ART COLLECTION

            TULSA – Ted M. Riseling, chairman of the Adkins Foundation Board, announced today that the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma have been jointly selected to receive the Eugene B. Adkins collection of art.  The joint partnership by Philbrook and OU was among many proposals submitted by leading museums across the country.

    D'HUMIÈRES NAMED DIRECTOR, CHIEF CURATOR OF OU'S FRED JONES JR. MUSEUM OF ART

            ARDMORE – Ghislain d’Humières, former assistant director at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco who also has held positions at Sotheby’s and Christie’s, was appointed director and chief curator of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma during the June meeting of the OU Board of Regents.
