On The Loose shows Susan Contreras' diversity and creativity, as well as how she gets her inspiration from the animal kingdom and keeps her sense of humor while realizing beautiful and colorful works of art. Her sensitivity speaks to adults, children, and students. Several of her large works were done specifically to fit the Sandy Bell Gallery at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.
Wit and imagination (in addition, of course, to the painterly qualities of composition, color, and line) are the major elements of the paintings by Susan Contreras. In this catalogue, detailing the exhibition titled On The Loose, wit and imagination are apparent in the motivation for much of the imagery inspired by such idiomatic expressions as "Don't let the cat out of the bag"; "Don't look now but there's a monkey on your back"; and "It's raining cats and dogs."
