OU Arabic Language Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible, you must be a full time OU student in good standing.

I am not an OU student, can I still apply?

You must be accepted for admission to OU to be eligible for our program. If you are a transfer student, you must first gain OU acceptance. The AFP recruits students three times annually, so you will be able to apply once you have started your studies here.

I am graduating within a year, am I still eligible?

We expect a commitment of between 4 and 5 years (including a yearlong overseas program before graduation). You must be able to reach Advanced High to Superior level Arabic, which takes approximately 5 years. For this reason, a junior or senior in first year Arabic would not be a good match for our program.

I am a graduate student, am I eligible?

No, the AFP is aimed at undergraduate students. As a graduate student you should look for funding such as the FLAS, Teaching Assistantships, and OU Graduate Fellowships.

How good does my Arabic have to be?

You may be at any level of Arabic, including a complete beginner if you are an incoming freshman.

I am a native speaker of Arabic, am I eligible to apply?

It depends on your level of proficiency in Arabic. If you speak and read Arabic fluently and are already at or above the Superior level, this is not the best match for you. However, if your level is in the Intermediate to Advanced range of proficiency, you are welcome to apply.

Do I have to be a Middle Eastern Studies or Arabic major?

No, the AFP accepts students from any major and is particularly interested in applicants that come from other disciplines such as business, engineering, journalism, natural sciences, and social sciences.

What if I fall below the required Grade Point Average (GPA)?

If a Flagship scholar falls below the required GPA, the AFP will not be able to fund the following semesters Arabic language classes until and when the minimum GPA is met.

What if I had a grade lower than a B in an Arabic Class?

If a Flagship scholar obtains a grade lower than a B in an Arabic class, the AFP will not be able to fund the following semester’s Arabic language classes until and when a B or higher grade is maintained in a subsequent Arabic class.

What is the Summer (Local or Overseas) Program?

There are two types of Summer programs supported by the AFP: the overseas program at the University of Alexandria, Egypt, and the local program hosted at OU or a sister Flagship institution on a rotation basis. Currently, the local program is hosted at the University of Texas-Austin. The Summer program is available on need basis and is intended for students in special circumstances who need to catch up with the program. While such a program may substitute for second or third year Arabic at OU, it may not substitute for fourth year Arabic.
