FRIENDS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA BIOLOGICAL STATION

In mid-September, the Station also welcomed back Dr. Dagmar Frisch (Berlin, Germany) and her husband, Heinrich. Dagmar is working as a postdoc on a NSF-funded project in my lab that is examining “resurrection ecology” of long-dormant resting eggs of zooplankton, and relating genetic/genomic changes to environmental changes during the past ~50 years.

I also want to extend a warm welcome to a new group of graduate students here at UOBS. Jessica Beyer and Thayer Hallidayschult (Lawrence U., Wisconsin) have joined Dave Hambright’s lab as two new Ph.D. students, while Billy Culver (Old Dominion U.) has joined my lab as an incoming Ph.D. student. They join an active group of current students, including Rich Zamor and Emily Remmel (Hambright lab). These latter two students were recipients of the UOBS Summer 2010 Graduate Research Fellowships thanks to the generosity of the Loren G. Hill Fund and the Hauger Family Graduate Fellowship Fund.

Since my last message, we’ve established three additional generously-endowed scholarship funds: (1) Harley P. Brown Scholarship; (2) Joy Catron-Brown Scholarship; (3) Barbara Shirley Scholarship. The first two were generously established by Gary Catron and Joy Catron-Brown, while our FUOBS secretary, Barbara Shirley, has so generously provided resources for an additional scholarship. On behalf of the students, staff, and faculty at UOBS, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continuing support of the Station.

Finally, I want to thank the dedicated UOBS staff for their hard work during this past year (Donna Cobb, Richard Page, Janet Isaac, Malon Ward, Gail Barnes, Lisa Reed). I appreciate all of your efforts, and I’m looking forward to a great year in 2011!

Best wishes to all!

Barbara Shirley

In the summer of 1958 I started my graduate work by attending the Biological Station where I took two excellent courses, one taught by Dr. George Bick and the other by Dr. Howard McCarley. Although I soon started a thesis project that did not involve field work, I felt that studying at the station was extremely beneficial so I took more courses there in the following two summers. After receiving my doctorate from the OU Zoology Department in 1964, I began teaching in the Life Sciences department at the University of Tulsa. My research in reproductive physiology later led to my doing collaborative projects with staff of the Hillcrest Infertility Center in Tulsa. When I retired after 33 years at TU, I moved back to Shawnee, my hometown, where I am now active in the work of Habitat for Humanity and also enjoy traveling, bird-watching, reading, and many things that I did not have enough time to do before retiring.
