Curriculum Vitae

Timothy Shary (B.A. Hampshire College, 1991; M.A. Ohio University, 1993; Ph.D. University of Massachusetts, 1998), Director of Film and Video Studies and Associate Professor.  Dr. Shary grew up in Pennsylvania and joined the FVS faculty in 2007, where he will be teaching courses on U.S. film history, film analysis and criticism, and film genres, such as the teen film.  His scholarly work has examined the films of Atom Egoyan, the use of video in film, youth in U.S. and international cinema, the films of Michael Mann, masculinity in American movies, and most recently, representations of the elderly in U.S. cinema.  He has published three books: Generation Multiplex: The Image of Youth in Contemporary American Cinema (University of Texas Press, 2002), Teen Movies: American Youth on Screen (Wallflower Press, 2005), and Youth Culture in Global Cinema (University of Texas Press, 2007).  He has written essays for many books and journals, and commentary by Dr. Shary has appeared in dozens of media outlets, including USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, and numerous AP papers.  Recently he was featured in the “Teens” episode of the “Indie Sex” series on the Independent Film Channel.  His next two books will be an anthology on American movie masculinity and a study of the elderly entitled The Silver Screen.
