Students specialize in one of five majors, each with a solid writing foundation and hands-on approach to their field of study.  Three full time academic advisers guide students toward their degrees. A career coordinator supervises professional internships essential to entering journalism and mass communication careers and assists students in their job search.

Students of Gaylord College are provided with access to Gaylord Hall, one of the most technologically advanced facilities in the country. Gaylord Hall houses a large multimedia laboratory, three advanced writing laboratories, 10 video-editing suites, two video conferences suites, two broadcast training facilities and two audio training suites.  Gaylord Hall is also a wireless building connecting students to the OU computer network from any classroom or public area.

Gaylord College students also have the opportunity to work at The Oklahoma Daily and the Sooner yearbook, two of the most respected collegiate publications in the United States, each winning multiple Gold Crowns and Pacemaker Awards for excellence in collegiate media. Students interested in broadcast journalism or broadcasting and electronic media have the opportunity to work on Oklahoma's top-ranked student news show, OU Nightly or one of several broadcast magazine shows.
