Internships
Students are strongly encouraged to supplement traditional classroom experience with on-the-job training. The location of the College on the edge of a major metropolitan market in Oklahoma City will provide you with outstanding professional opportunities while earning your degree. Such experience may come in the form of full-time or part-time positions with professional communication organizations and departments. Internships outside the state are also encouraged. Experience gained through the internship program may take the form of paid or unpaid positions. Students may arrange their own internships or choose one of the many positions offered through the College.
Students who rely solely on course work as preparation for entry into the professional world are missing a valuable opportunity to expand their professional preparation and development through the completion of an internship.
You may apply for internship credit if the eligibility requirements are met. Please note that credit internships are not for everyone. Internships are supervised, on-the-job learning experiences designed for highly motivated and able students who have demonstrated the best overall preparation for professional success. The credit internships also require the completion of academic work while the internship is in progress and payment of tuition for those hours. You may elect not to seek academic credit for internships and choose to regard the work experience itself as valuable real-life experience that adds to your preparation for first-time employment.
Work Experiences
Opportunities on campus range from reporting, editing, advertising sales and print production to broadcast announcing and production. Students may seek volunteer and/or paid positions on The Oklahoma Daily newspaper, The WIRE, a student run radio station on the Internet and the SAP channel of Cox cable channel 4 or with TV4OU, a student run TV station, also on Cox cable channel 4, National Public Radio station KGOU, or with the telecommunications center located within Copeland Hall, which produces live and pre-recorded programs for Norman cable television.
