Guidelines for Credit Internships

You may apply for internship credit if you meet the eligibility requirements listed below. For credit internships are not for everyone. Internships are supervised, on-the-job learning experiences designed for highly motivated and able students who have demonstrated the best overall preparation for professional success. You may elect not to seek academic credit for internships and regard the time spent as valuable real-life experience added to your résumé. Internships for credit can be paid or unpaid.

Eligibility

  • Have earned at least 75 hours of degree credit and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 before the internship is accepted.
  • Have earned at least 15 hours in JMC credit hours and have a GPA of at least 3.00 in all JMC courses through the last completed semester. If you are eligible for internship credit, locate one or more potential sponsoring organizations.
  •  Make an appointment with Career/Internship Coordinator Heather Spencer on iadvise.ou.edu, call (405)325-3689 or email has@ou.edu. Also visit the OUr Student Services Facebook Page.
  • Check the internship postings on the OU Career Services’ Web site at www.hiresooner.com.
  • Check with your faculty adviser.
  • Make necessary arrangements with the internship sponsor. If the sponsoring organization requires any application forms, complete them.

After securing an internship, provide the following information to Gaylord College’s Internship Coordinator either in paper form or email:

  • A complete Internship Application Form, available in the Student Services Center (2nd floor, Gaylord Hall), or download the form.
  • Written approval from your internship supervisor stating your duties and all contact information for the on site supervisor.
  • Once approved for credit, you will be notified by e-mail that you have been cleared to enroll in JMC 3800 (Internship) for two or three hours credit.
  • A signed contract provided by the college’s Internship Coordinator.

If you do not meet all eligibility requirements, a signed letter of recommendation from a full-time JMC faculty member must accompany your application. This letter is available from the Internship Coordinator.

You must be enrolled in JMC 3800 no later than the end of the second week of the actual internship to receive credit. Gaylord College does not permit retroactive enrollment in an internship you completed in a previous semester.

Requirements (Students)

Students participating in internship for academic credit are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • For 3 semester hours of credit, a student must work a minimum of 240 hours total. This averages to 15 hours per week during fall or spring terms or 30 hours per week during the summer.
  • For 2 semester hours of credit a student must work a minimum of 160 hours total. This averages to 10 hours weekly during the fall or spring terms or 20 hours weekly during the summer.

NOTE: No enrollment for one semester hour of credit is permitted under JMC 3800 because it is believed that such a limited experience would be of little value.

  • Provide a Internship Weekly Report Form with a listing of that week’s internship activities. Both you and your supervisor must sign the report.
  • Complete a final Student Evaluation of the experience with full disclosure of activities and opinions sent to you by the college's coordinator.

Requirements (Supervisors)

The on-site supervisor at the company, institution or organization is expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Provide regular supervision of your work performance by giving on-the-spot critiques, constructive criticism and professional counsel, appropriate to the duties to which you are assigned.
  • Provide progressively challenging work opportunities so that your internship will continue to be a learning experience.
  • Complete a Final Evaluation of Intern Performance at the end of the internship sent by the college's coordinator.

Please note — In addition to the aforementioned procedures and requirements, these general policies apply:

Internships for The Oklahoma Daily, THE WIRE, shows on TV4OU or KGOU –Public Radio do not qualify for internship credit.
