Background
Peter J. Gade is the journalism area head and a Gaylord Family Endowed Professor in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma. He is co-editor of Changing the News: The Forces Shaping Journalism in Uncertain Times (2011), and co-author of Twilight of Press Freedom: The Rise of People’s Journalism (2001).
Gade’s research explores the nexus of media management and economics, news sociology and normative values of journalism. He studies change, the forces that create it, its impact on news organizational thinking and strategy, and how it impacts work routines and professional values.
His research has been published in a number of journals, including Journalism & Communication Monographs, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly and the Journal of Media Business Studies. He has won research awards from the Media Management & Economics and the Newspaper divisions of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. He has also worked as a newsroom organizational consultant for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and several newspapers in Oklahoma.
Before entering the academy, he worked for midsize newspapers in New York state in a variety of news-editorial tasks (bureau chief, assignment editor, reporter). His Ph.D. is from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
Gade has been on the faculty of the University of Oklahoma since 1998, and has served as area head from 1998-2003 and 2005 to present.
