Background

Prof. Chàvez was a city editor of his hometown newspaper, the El Paso Herald-Post. He previously worked as a reporter at the Seattle Times and the Yakima Herald-Republic, with other reporter/editor assignment sat the Albuquerque Tribune, the Miami Herald and the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. He is a two-time winner of teaching awards from the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and has taught at San Josè State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Colorado, and at the University of South Dakota, where he served as chairman of the journalism department. His teaching/research interests include writing, editing, ethics, history, the ethnic press, and multi-cultural communication.
