Journalism student receive Mark of Excellence Awards

Journalism student receive Mark of Excellence Awards

The Oklahoma Daily was named best student newspaper and Sower Magazine was named best student magazine in the Region 8 SPJ Mark of Excellence competition. Winners for Region 8, which includes Oklahoma and Texas, were announced at a luncheon Saturday during the SPJ Region 8 convention in Austin, Texas. The Daily’s Web site, OUDaily.com, finished second in the competition for “best affiliated Web site.”


In addition, journalism junior LeighAnne Manwarren came home with a third-place award for general news reporting for her story in The Daily headlined “Regents accused of censorship.”


Journalism students also were honored by SPJ for their work at KGOU. Graham Lee Brewer won first place for radio feature for “The Future of Sky City”; Logan Layden won second place for radio news reporting for “Smoking”; and the team of Brewer, Will Holland, Gernethia Rich and Andrew Brown won first and third place for radio in-depth reporting for two projects with Assignment Radio.
