There’s something here for everyone and it is never too soon or too late to get started!


The Gaylord College has more than a dozen different student organizations and co-curricular activities for our five JMC majors. Freshmen and transfer students are encouraged to join during your first semester at OU. Graduate students are also encouraged to join.

 

Student clubs meet to discuss industry trends, have invited guest speakers, network with professionals and take field trips to large national media hubs like Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. And, there is almost always free food at the meetings!

Kappa Tau Alpha is a national college honor society that recognizes academic excellence and promotes scholarship in undergraduate journalism and mass communication. Magazine Interest Group

A student organization affiliated with the national organization, Ed2010,"a community of young magazine editors and magazine-editor-wannabes,"as it describes itself. The group sponsors trips to visit consumer, B2Band public relations magazine offices to talk with editors and others on staff. A trip to New York City, magazine central in the U.S., is an annual event. It also sponsors guest speakers on a variety of magazine-related subjects and helps students find magazine internships.Membership includes being part of MIG-L, the group's  list serv.

Student Film Production Club

The Student Film Production club works to promote student productions,educate its members, and develop their skills in the field of video production. Although sponsored by the Film and Video Studies (FVS) program, the club is open to all OU students and provides its members a place to develop production projects and meet other like-minded people. In addition to holding regularly scheduled meetings and special events,the club also maintains an informational web page (click on the “film club” link from the FVS web page), and a web forum page.

Co-Curricular Activities/Practicums

Afghan 101

This ground-breaking project is a partnership with Visiting Correspondent Mike Boettcher, ABC News and the Gaylord College. Students work with Boettcher, who is embedded in Afghanistan, via weekly Skype sessions. Professor John Schmeltzer leads the students in the classroom to also produce multimedia stories using front-line footage as well as create stories of their own featuring the families of the 101st Airborne Army unit.

Always Oklahoma!

Always Oklahoma! is a morning-style television magazine produced by students.

FPU The Series

This new web series features puppets as the main characters as well as live actors from the drama department. Students have the opportunity to rotate through all of the different technical and creative positions to produce this unique show.

Gaylord Hall Productions

Students interested in creating corporate videos and documentaries will be interested in this program. Students will work with Professor Scott Hodgson on various video productions for real clients.

KGOU/NPR Radio

Students can work as producers or on-air talent at this National Public Radio station located in Copeland Hall.

This award-winning student newscast is produced nightly throughout the semester and broadcast on OUTV and on Cox Cable Channel 7.

Students can participate in this weekly student-run television sports magazine either behind the scenes or as on-screen talent.

The award-winning student-run newspaper provides students experience in all phases of contemporary newspaper production including reporting, layout, ad sales, editing and online content development.

Routes is an online magazine where students produce feature-length articles and multimedia content about stories that are of interest to Oklahomans.

The Set is a syndicated television music magazine that can be seen statewide on Cox Cable's OnDemand system.

Sooner Yearbook and Student Media Publications

Ranked one of the top yearbooks nationwide, Sooner focuses on capturing the year that was with storytelling packages of text, photos and design. From in-depth profiles on the faculty you’ll remember forever and inspection of the trends you may want to forget to stats about our famed sports teams and the latest campus news and events. This group also produces several magazine inserts for the OU Daily each year.
