Program Overview

The OU Summer in Washington, D.C. Program will immerse current Gaylord College students into the culture of government agencies, non-profits and politics in the Nation’s capitol. Students will learn about political campaigns, governance and interest group politics in weekly seminars, featuring political practitioners and national political journalists. They will receive practical experience and exposure to national politics as interns through various Washington offices. This program is for students in ALL GAYLORD COLLEGE majors.


Program Dates

Summer 2010 program begins on Monday, June 7, 2010, and ends on Friday, August 13, 2010.  The topical seminars will occur between the dates of June 15 through July 22 (three times each week).  Students will continue in their internship placement until August 13.


Application

Students will need to submit an official program application by no later than Wednesday, November 4, 2009.  Each application will have 1) Statement of Interest, 2) Personal References, 3)  Writing/Work samples, and 4) Resume.  Application packets may be found on the Gaylord College website, “Student Opportunities,” OU Summer In Washington Program.  Additionally, application packets will be available in the Gaylord College Student Services Center, on the second floor of Gaylord Hall.


College Credit

This summer experience will allow JMC students to earn a total of two (1) credit hours of experience for the summer semester through the JMC 3011 Mass Media Practicum.  Students will be required to enroll in both the June summer session for the entire summer.


Cost

This summer experience will not have an additional program cost, other than the standard one (1) semester credit hour charge from the University of Oklahoma.  Additionally, students will be responsible for the cost of their transportation to and from Washington, D.C., from Norman (or their home), as well as local transportation while living in Washington, D.C.


Scholarships

There may be a limited number of scholarships available for this program. Your program application will also serve as your scholarship application. Awards will be based on financial need.


Internship Placement

Gaylord College faculty and staff will work with students to secure an appropriate internship in Washington, D.C.  Students are also encouraged to seek out and help in this placement process. Traditional journalism internships at newspapers and broadcast media are very competitive. Possible internships will place students in major public relations or advertising agencies, national or international offices of major non-profits, congressional offices or major corporations. Note that summer internships in the Washington, D.C. area typically last no fewer than ten (10) weeks.


Housing

Gaylord College will assist students in locating housing in the Washington, D.C., area.  Students will be ultimately responsible for securing their place of residence while in the Washington, D.C., area, including payment (which can be expensive).  Efforts will be made to direct students toward dormitory housing at area colleges and universities.
