Background

John Hockett is the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Administration at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma. Previously, he held the Dean of Student Development position at Oklahoma City Community College. Hockett also served the University of Oklahoma in the College of Liberal Studies, directing the activities for the undergraduate program division. In addition to his administrative duties at the University of Oklahoma, Hockett holds an adjunct faculty appointment in the College of Liberal Studies teaching a variety of courses in the social sciences.

Hockett has a strong student-centered background in the areas of academic advising, financial aid, career services, student life, career exploration, recruitment, student programming, and higher education administration. His experience includes working with traditional and non-traditional students in both four-year research universities and community colleges. In 1998, Hockett was the recipient of the University of Oklahoma's Distinguished Service Award.

Professionally, Hockett has been active with the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA), Oklahoma Association of Academic Advising, the American Council on Education--Adult Learner Division, Gamma Beta Phi Society (Chartering Chapter Advisor--University of Oklahoma), and Golden Key International Honor Society (University of Oklahoma).

A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Hockett graduated from Jenks High School. He and his wife, Angie, have two children, Matthew and Brennan.
