Posted March 11, 2007

Several Gaylord College students, the staff of The Oklahoma Daily and journalism professor Kathryn Jenson White were recognized as among Oklahoma’s top journalists by the Oklahoma Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The Daily staff competed at the professional level with other state newspapers with circulations between 7,000 and 17,999 to win 22 awards. The Daily received second place for the best overall newspaper and second place for best page one layout and design. Both times The Daily finished behind the Norman Transcript. See the complete list of individual OU Daily winners at the Student Media Web site.

Journalism seniors Kris Akin and Lisa Janssen, along with journalism alum Annie Gasparro and former graduate student Zhe "Tony" Zhang won second place for team in-depth enterprise reporting for a story that ran in The Norman Transcript. OU students received all three awards in that category.

Journalism professor Kathryn Jenson White also received two awards for her creative endeavors. Jenson White received second place for her Arts Criticism column written for the Oklahoma Gazette and third place for her work as editor of the student-produced alumni publication, Pulse.

The awards were presented at a banquet, Saturday, March 1 at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Oklahoma City.
