Phil Harding & Brooke Thomas
Phil Harding, former executive and director of all English language output at the BBC, works with journalism senior Brooke Thomas as she writes copy for The Wire in the OU Nightly/Wire newsroom. Harding coached Thomas and others on their writing process for broadcast media, encouraging them to speak the content as they write it to see how it will sound when read on air.

Phil Harding, former executive and editor at the BBC, will be at the Gaylord College of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma March 24-27. Harding will be visiting as a precursor to an intersession study abroad course taught by Gaylord College Dean Joe Foote and Ralph Beliveau in London this coming May.


After retiring from the BBC in 2007, Harding is now a professional journalist and media consultant speaking at colleges and conferences worldwide. He has recently been made a fellow of the prestigious Society of Editors. Harding’s career at BBC began in 1969 and encompassed a variety of editorial and managerial positions that placed him in charge of many of the BBC’s most prestigious programs on radio, television and in recent years online. Harding served as the BBC’s chief political adviser in 1995 and 1996, when he left the BBC, he was in charge of all English language output on the BBC World Service.


Harding will be speaking with various journalism classes on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, he will spend the day with the staff and crew of OU Nightly, the award-winning student-produced television newscast. Harding will also attend the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters annual convention in Oklahoma City with Dean Foote on March 27. See complete itinerary below.


In May 2008, Dean Foote and Beliveau will take a group of journalism students to London for a week of study and travel. The group will visit the BBC and various other London media and advertising outlets.
