Sooner Schooner Sculpture (photo by Konrad Eek)First introduced as part of regular University of Oklahoma functions in 1964, the Sooner Schooner became an official OU mascot in 1980. Since then, the unique covered wagon mascot has become synonymous with the excitement of OU football games. OU fans stand and give thunderous Sooner Schooner Sculpture (photo by Konrad Eek) applause as the Schooner’s team of matching ponies, Boomer and Sooner, power it on Owen Field in a victory ride after OU scores.
Now, OU alumni and friends can own a replica of the Sooner Schooner while, at the same time, supporting academic and athletic scholarships. OU’s sculptor-in-residence Paul Moore, well known to the OU community as the artist of the iconic 12-foot bronze Seed Sower statue, has created a three-dimensional bronze sculpture of the famed Sooner Schooner and its ponies.
A limited edition of 190 24-inch bronze castings of “The Sooner Schooner” sculpture will be sold. The numbered pieces are available for $7,500 each, with proceeds benefiting academic and athletic scholarships. Of each purchase, $5,500 is tax deductible. Corporate donors have the option to select a 48-inch piece available for $20,000.
Each sculpture will be numbered in order of sale. Shipping and handling is included in the purchase price. Please allow up to 10 weeks for delivery from the foundry.
A world-renowned sculptor, Paul Moore joined OU in June 1997 to reinvigorate the figurative sculpture program. Today, his Norman studio is filled with students and assistants working by his side, learning the art and techniques of sculpting. Moore’s work is in the collections of numerous municipal, corporate, private and international institutions, including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and the U.S. Capital Collection in Washington, D.C.
“While particularly well known for his monumental sculptures of seminal moments in western history, Moore is also a sensitive sculptor of life-size busts and small-scale scenes that resonate with emotion,” writes Gretchen Reynolds in SouthwestArt magazine.
A fifth-generation Oklahoman, Moore sculpted the George Lynn Cross and Carl Albert statues on the Norman campus, the 6-foot in diameter bronze rendition of the OU seal in Oklahoma Memorial Union, and the Seed Sower statue on each of OU’s three campuses. He currently is working on a 365-foot-long bronze monument of the Oklahoma Land Run, “Oklahoma Centennial Land Run Monument,” scheduled for completion in 2014. This will be the largest free-standing bronze sculpture in the world.
