President David Boren initiated the Sooner Heritage Scholarship program in 2003 to provide additional scholarship opportunities for our students and to help make sure, in the face of necessary increases in tuition and fees, that attending OU remains within reach of deserving students.
The Sooner Heritage program has provided approximately $9 million and in excess of 16,000 scholarships since inception.
Any student is eligible to apply for a Sooner Heritage Scholarship, but preference is given to students with special needs and circumstances and to those whose family incomes are in the $30,000 to $75,000 range.
The scholarships are especially important for students from middle-income families who don’t qualify for federal and state grants, but who need help with the increased costs. The greatest need is for unrestricted scholarships that will benefit students in all majors at OU.
Hundreds of alumni and friends have made annual gifts for Sooner Heritage Scholarships. In addition, several donors have made endowment gifts and pledges that support more than 1,300 scholarships. These endowments will sustain the program into the future.
Donors who contribute $500 to the campaign will have a scholarship awarded in their name. Donors of $10,000 or more can create a named Sooner Heritage Scholarship endowment.
