Why I am a MH Scholar: I want to develop deeper bonds with patients as I help them.  Being well versed in the humanities will allow me to connect with patients on a variety of different levels.

Why I am a MH Scholar: I chose to pursue the Medical Humanities route because I believe it will prepare me to be a physician with a deep understanding for my patients and an appreciation of their unique perspectives. I think that excellent physicians know how to incorporate their passion for science and medicine into their passion for people, and I know that the Medical Humanities program has prepared me for that.

Favorite Aspect of being at OU: The community at OU is tremendous. I have loved being able to attend a public university with all the benefits of the large campus atmosphere. At the same time, however, I have had the tight-knit small campus experience as a result of my involvement with the honors college and other campus leadership groups.

This gives me a multidisciplinary view of the medical field, and helps me better understand my future patients. It’s a way of promoting empathy in medical care.

Why I am a MH Scholar: I believe that medicine is not limited to isolating and treating specific areas of the body; it also involves building patients’ trust and caring for the psychosocial dimensions of disease. When a doctor interacts with a sick person, he or she interacts with a person on a deep level and forms an intimate bond. It is a bond that is not limited to the tissue that the doctor treats, but addresses as well the soul and psyche of the patient.

Why I am a MH Scholar: The Medical Humanities program gives me opportunity and encouragement to study deeper into the humanities – something that I might not otherwise have been able to do in a traditional pre-med program.  I feel privileged to take advantage of this academic opportunity.
