Welcome to the OU Honors College -- an intellectually vibrant community of great students, faculty, and staff, where ideas are nurtured, and students ascend to new academic heights.
A big part of the community’s success and draw are the students themselves. Students come from all majors and backgrounds. They have initiated and sustained many great activities such as the Informed Citizens Discussion Groups, Classic Film Nights, and Honors Student Association. Most of all, the students bring intellectual commitment. Our students don’t just study for a grade. They study because understanding the world really matters.
In the Honors College, you will enjoy small, challenging classes taught by highly engaged and talented faculty. Students rate Honors classes nearly two standard errors above similar sized classes outside the Honors College! You can start your Honors College journey with our Outdoor Adventure program – a weeklong backpacking trek through the Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico with your future classmates. You can join one of the nearly 50 David Ray Informal Reading Groups to share, discuss, and debate important books each semester with your colleagues – and thanks to a generous donor, the books are free. You might visit our National Award Office and add your name to the 182 National Award winners that OU has produced since year 2000. Our acclaimed Medical Humanities program recruits, engages, and retains top students to become Oklahoma physicians. You can attend the world’s most prestigious university as part of our Honors at Oxford summer program, where you will experience Oxford by full immersion with real Oxford tutors and teachers. And as you near the end of your college journey, be sure to take part in one of our Student to Professional Mentoring Experiences.
As a member of the OU Honors College, you will receive an intensive, liberal arts education while also enjoying all the benefits, traditions and opportunities of a major research university. As part of your Honors curriculum, you will engage in original research under the guidance of an OU faculty member. You can follow your passion beyond what you read in textbooks. Many students have turned their Honors theses into scholarly, peer-reviewed publications. We support your research through five successful programs with these crazy acronyms: FYRE, UROP, URD, HRAP, THURJ. Click on each to learn more.
If this sounds like the kind of experience you want out of college, come check us out. We welcome students of all backgrounds, either as an incoming freshman or after you have one or more semesters at OU under your belt.
I look forward to learning with and from you during your OU journey in the Honors College. Please come see me in DLB 160 and tell me what you are thinking about.
