In the last two years, “Dinner with the Dean” has become a new, rich tradition at the Honors College—one of the most successful ways that Honors students interact with other students, faculty, distinguished visitors, and the Honors College Dean. In essence, the Honors College hosts a buffet dinner for about 50 Honors students one-to-two times every month during the regular school year. The format is that the Dean serves the meal from a buffet line while students visit with a special guest at dinner tables brought in for the occasion. Once the meal is concluded, all move into the Nancy Mergler Library at the Honors College where the special guest gives a brief presentation on a current topic of great interest to students. The students afterwards engage the speaker with questions and discussion in what is a very lively and productive exchange. The entire event is typically only 60-70 minutes from the start of the meal to the conclusion of discussion. Special guests have included President David L. Boren, the producers of the History Channel, the History Channel Historian Dr. Steven Gillon, Dr. Christopher Howard, famous writers and scientists, and experts in many fields. While the event is kept brief so as not to intrude into evening classes or study time, Dinner with the Dean has become an important focus for student involvement at the Honors College and an important enhancement of the Honors College as a learning community.
