Purpose
The retention scholarships are designed to reward OU undergraduate students for outstanding academic performance during their freshman year. They are coordinated by the OU Scholars Selection Committee, Dr. Carolyn Morgan, Chair.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligible students must be direct-from-high school admits to OU who entered Spring 2007, Summer 2007 or Fall 2007 and full-time students (12 hours or more) during both Fall and Spring semesters of the 2007/2008 academic year.
Students may not hold any general university continuing scholarship award (including but not limited to Oklahoma Academic Scholar, National Merit, Regents Scholar, Award of Excellence, Honor Scholar, Valedictorian, American Indian Tuition Waiver or Advantage). Students who received no general university talent-based scholarship during their freshman year are encouraged to apply. Students holding first-year-only awards (University Scholar, PLC, PSC) are also encouraged to apply.
Students who have earned a 3.80 or better cumulative grade point average at the end of the Spring 2008 semester will be considered for the scholarships.
Application (deadline was May 1, 2008)
Applications will be available online at the OU Scholars web site in March. All potentially eligible students will be sent an invitation to apply during the Spring 2008 semester. Announcements regarding the Retention Scholarship application will be placed in the Oklahoma Daily. All applications must be received by the OU Scholars Program by 5:00 p.m., Thursday, May 1, 2008.

The R. Boyd Gunning Scholar Award was established in 1978 in honor of Mr. R. Boyd Gunning (1913-1990), who was the first Executive Director of the University of Oklahoma Foundation, Inc. The nature of the award was revised in 1991 to further enhance the prestige and honor associated with being named an R. Boyd Gunning Scholar.
Residency Requirement: Awarded to Oklahoma resident OU students.
Amount of Award: $2,000 per year ($1,000 per semester) for up to three academic years.
Selection Process: Ten scholars are selected in late May, after the spring semester grades have been recorded. Students are notified of their award in June.
Requirements to Retain Award: R. Boyd Gunning Scholars must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA. The OU Scholars Program will administer and verify continued eligibility of the award. Detailed information regarding these requirements will be provided with the award letter
The Alumni Scholars Program, founded in 1979, matches each award recipient with an individual who makes a financial contribution to the University of Oklahoma. Alumni Scholars correspond with their Alumni Sponsor on a regular basis. The Office of Development is responsible for raising funds for this scholarship program.
Residency Requirement: Awarded to resident or non-resident OU students.
Amount of Award: $1,000 per year ($500 per semester) for up to three academic years.
Selection Process: Alumni Scholars are selected in late May, after the spring semester grades have been recorded. Students are notified of their award in June.
The number of scholarships awarded will vary based on available funds.

Nicholson Alumni Scholars |
The Dr. James L. Nicholson Alumni Scholars Program was founded in 2001 through a bequest from the estate of OU alumnus, Dr. James L. Nicholson.
Residency Requirement: Awarded to resident or non-resident OU students.
