Minutes for Business Meeting
Intercultural/Development Communication
May 26, 2003
San Diego, California

1. Wiseman convened the meeting at 5:15 pm.
2. Minutes from previous meeting approved.
3. The Intercultural and Development Communication Division of ICA has approximately 566 members as of April 2003, equivalent to around 10% of the association's membership. It vies with Organizational Communication and Communication and Technology for second place in division size, after Mass Communication.
4. The Intercultural Communication specialization received 64 competitive papers and seven panel proposals. A total of 44 papers (69%) and 4 panel proposals (57%) were recommended for programming. For the International Communication and the Development Communication specializations, a total of 72 competitive papers and 10 panel proposals were received, and 42 competitive papers (58%) and 8 panel proposals (80%) were recommended for programming.
5. Our annual budget is $1857. A total of $800 was spent on awards. Administrative costs (e.g., mailing, printing) were $241.61. Thus, a total of $815.39 should be carried over to next year's budget.
6. The division's new chair is Karin Wilkins, from the University of Texas at Austin. The division chose a new vice-chair. Consistent with our by-laws and the policy of alternating vice-chairs between intercultural and international/development communication, the new vice-chair's background is intercultural communication. The vice-chair-elect is Min-Sun Kim from the University of Hawaii, Manoa. She will serve as vice-chair for two years and then resume the chairship for another two years.
7. Jody Waters was recognized for her work with students.
8. From the Board report:
a. membership fees will increase next year
b. future conferences will be in New Orleans (2004) and NYC (2005)
c. the Board approved a new interest group: Intergroup Communication
d. ICA has gained NGO status. Ted Turner donates $10,000 for international communication research proposals
e. the ICA newsletter is available on-line now; however the number of hits is decreasing and the Board wants to know why
f. Cindy Gallois presented a proposal for a Journal of Cross-National Communication and would want feedback from IDC
g. the Board wants feedback from division members on the electronic submission process
h. in response to a question by Bella Mody, the Board would want Karin Wilkins, the new IDC president to be involved with the committee reviewing proposals for the UN collaboration
9. Report by Karin Wilkins, the new IDC chair: she will try to get involved with the UN collaborative project; she will get involved with the process of evaluating the electronic submission process; and she will form a nominating committee for the position of Secretary.
10. Announcements:
a. Global Fusion Conference will be held in Austin this year
b. Job announcement in California State Polytechnic University
11. The meeting was adjourned at 6:00pm.
