Division News from The ICA Newsletter, 28/3, November, 2000.

By Bella Mody, Division Chair

Hi, Five!

Your Washington proposals for papers and panels will be with Vice-Chair Rich Wiseman and I by the time you receive this.

This is to announce Division Five's Call for Nominations for its first dissertation awards to be made at the Washington meeting.

Vice Chair Rich Wiseman and I decided there was no way we could select a Lifetime Achievement Award winner in 2001 that would approximate the productivity of Everett M. Rogers, our first award winner last year. We therefore decided to use savings from your annual division membership for a Doctoral Dissertation Award at the Washington meeting.

*Doctoral dissertations nominated for the division award this year must have been defended successfully within the last two years (Sep 1 1998-Aug 31, 2000).

*Nominations are welcomed from any source including the individual doctoral candidate.

*The nomination packet must include (a) a cover letter with the name, address, telephone and email address of the nominee and all contact information for his/her advisor, and (b) an integrated summary of the dissertation that does not exceed 30 pages, not counting references. Do not submit the complete dissertation. This summary should be organized under the following subheadings: title, abstract, rationale, theoretical framework, research questions, relevant literature, methods, results and conclusions. The name of the doctoral candidate should not be listed on the summary or be evident from the text or references.

*The summary of the dissertation will be sent for blind review and rank order to a panel of elected officers of the division in the last five years, not including any advisors or dissertation directors associated with the nominations. The panel will include one reviewer from each of the three foci of the division: intercultural, international, and international development communication.

*Four copies of the nominating packet must be sent to Rich Wiseman, Vice Chair ICA Division 5, Department of Speech Communication EC 199, California State University, Fullerton, Ca. 92834-6868. post-marked no later than February 15, 2001.
