Biographical Information for Peter Gries, Ph.D.

Peter Hays Gries is the Harold J. & Ruth Newman Chair in US-China Issues and Director of the Institute for U.S.-China Issues at the University of Oklahoma. He is author of China’s New Nationalism: Pride, Politics, and Diplomacy (University of California Press, 2004), co-editor (with Stanley Rosen) of State and Society in 21st Century China: Crisis, Contention, and Legitimation (Routledge 2004), and has written over 20 journal articles and book chapters.


Dr. Gries earned his BA in East Asian Studies from Middlebury College, MA in Chinese Studies from the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Mershon Center for Security Studies at Ohio State University, and an assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Colorado before coming to OU.
