TUBERCULOSIS TESTING POLICY

The University Oklahoma Tuberculosis (TB) Testing Policy requires students who meet any of the below criteria to provide evidence of having been tested for tuberculosis within the six months prior to attending classes at OU for the first time.

  • Students currently holding a US nonimmigrant visa
  • A US-citizen student who has resided outside the US for more than 8 weeks continuously prior to enrollment
  • Students with a health/medical condition that suppresses the immune system
  • Students with known exposure to someone with active tuberculosis disease

If you meet any of the above criteria, you must comply with the Tuberculosis Testing Requirement. For other students, this is a recommendation. To comply with the testing policy, you must

  • Provide a medical record from a physician, clinic or hospital indicating that you have been tested for TB in the 6 months prior to enrollment, or
  • Provide documentation of a negative chest x-ray in the 6 months prior to enrollment, or
  • Receive a TB skin test at OU Health Services or Cleveland County Health Department (at no cost to the student), or
  • Provide a medical record indicating successful treatment for TB disease.  All documentation must be in English or be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Having received a BCG vaccination does not exempt you from the OU tuberculosis testing requirement.  If you have had a positive skin test, a chest x-ray is required to show the absence of active disease.  If you have received an MMR vaccination less than six weeks prior to being tested for tuberculosis, your test may result in a false positive reading.  Advise medical personnel prior to testing.
