Karin Hodgins-Jones, “Tug”
Juror, Rand Elliott of Elliott + Associates Architects in Oklahoma City selected “Tug” by artist Karin Hodgins-Jones from a pool of national submissions. The piece utilizes a 6.5 ft. x 25 ft. lycra panel installed on the gallery floor that will be manipulated by strings through series of motors and pulleys suspended 30 ft. above the gallery floor. Viewers will be able to experience the piece from the gallery floor and the 3rd and 4th floor viewing spaces that surround the gallery.
Mrs. Jones describes this piece as “an exploration into using string as the tenuous line of connection between the mechanical and the pliable. Having always been interested in language translation, the near omnipresence of machines in contemporary life and the common memory of elemental or organic movements in landscape, bodies or plants, my work creates systems that harvests these elements to create simulations of elemental or organic movement”.
